| Junior Sportsman of the Year |
| Queenstown ski racer Adam Barwood currently training and racing with the Sugar Bowl Academy/CA didn’t even know he’d been nominated for a gong at last Friday’s Central Otago Sports Awards.
The 17-year-old is even more shocked to learn he’s now Junior Sportsman of the Year for a stellar 2009, mum Anne Barwood says.
“It was a bit of a surprise,” she says.
Adam, a New Zealand Development Ski Racing Team member, won the NZ giant slalom and junior slalom. He placed third in the super G last year. He was also the first Kiwi male home in the Winter Games slalom, plus the second Kiwi home in the giant slalom.
Anne learned at the ceremony in Alexandra that Ski Racing NZ’s alpine director James Lazor had nominated Adam. Adam, in the United States where he’s picked up silver and bronze at FIS events, emailed Anne to say how cool it was to win the prestigious title.
“He was really pleased,” she says.
